Smooth Drawing Tutorial

I often get questions on how i make my creatures. Here is a small tutorial to give all of you an idea on how I do it!

You need:
- A doodle
- A scanner
- A Wacom Tablet (optional... but makes life easier)
- Basic knowledge of Macromedia Flash
- Photoshop (optional)
- Time to play with it!

** note: you can click on any of the images to make them bigger.

Step 1: Skribble it out!
Draw it on paper first. I find that it's a lot easier to skribble things out on paper rather than creating it from scratch on the computer. Try to make dark outlines around the lines you will be keeping. Once you are satisfied with your paper doodle, scan it in.

Step 2: Flash
Import your scanned in doodle. It will import onto a layer. Lock that layer. Create a new layer.

Step 3: Trace
Remember those dark lines you did? Now trace them! I like using my Wacom Tablet and Pen for this.

Step 4: Smoothing is your BEST friend
Highlight different sections and use the smooth and straighten tools to make... well... smooth lines! This makes the overall drawing much cleaner looking. Don't forget to zoom out and look at it as a whole.

Step 5: Tweak and playDon't like the nose? Change it! Needs more detail? Add it! Have fun and take time making it look the best.

Step 6: ColorPlay with different colors. Remember, un-do is very easy! Take the time to figure out which color work best with each other.

Step 7: Finishing touches, shadows/ highlights

I tend to color pick colors just 1 shade darker than the base, and use that for the shadow. Remember to smooth your shadows so that they fit nicely in the character.

Step 8: Export

Export the image as either a vector or a rastered file type. For simple projects i tend to use .Jpgs. Bring it into Photoshop or Illustrator and play around with it! Put it onto Birthday Invites, or print it onto a t-shirt. The possibilities are endless.
